Chicagoan David Vandervelde has obviously listened to a lot of T. Rex. The artist's debut album, MOONSTATION HOUSE BAND--which Vandervelde wrote and produced, and on which he played all the instruments--has all the glam, snarl, folk-slide, and cosmic boogie of classic Marc Bolan. This fact is highlighted, not coincidentally, by Vandervelde's Bolan-esque timbre and vocal affectations. Yet MOONSTATION HOUSE BAND doesn't collapse under the weight of its influence. Instead, it offers a sexy, exciting ride of expansive, well-constructed pop that should please T. Rex fans, as well as the ears of the uninitiated.
